Welcome to Neverland...a place where you never have to grow up. A place where little "lost" boys can be found looking for their Mothers, where Indians and Pirates fight, and where many a tiny fairy reside.
Welcome to Peter Pan's whimsical and famous Neverland.
Normally, Neverland can be found, according to Peter, "...second to the right, and straight on till morning, " but for the rest of this week, you and your children can find Neverland residing inside Atlanta's famous Fox Theater on Peachtree Street.
Step inside "Neverland" and you'll quickly find Wendy, Michael, John, Nana, and the rest of the Darling faily inside their home's nursery. Stick around a little bit longer and you'll soon encounter Peter Pan, Captain Hook and his sidekick Smee, Tiger Lily, and even that infamous "ticking" crocodile!
Theater of the Stars' production of Peter Pan, starting Cathy Rigby as Peter Pan, and Brent Barrett, as Captain Hook, is a delightful tale suitable for all ages.
As we've come to expect from these productions, the stage sets are beautiful, interactive works of art that bring our stories to life. Add in iconic characters that adults and children are familiar with and you have a recipe for a great family night out.
Young children will enjoy this show not only because they are familiar with its story but because it contains something for everyone - Tinkerbell and Wendy for the girls and Pirates and Indians for the boys. But adults will enjoy it as well. (I found the two-hour plus production went by rather quickly.) The musical numbers were fun to watch, and if you've seen Peter Pan before, you are probably familiar with one or two of the songs ("I Won't Grow Up," "I Gotta Crow"). For me, I always love watching the choreography. One of my favorite performers last night was Tiger Lily, played by Jenna Wright. (Sidenote: The video below is not Jenna Wright, but I wanted you to see what these amazing performers are doing in the role of Tiger Lily.)
The play, as noted above, is slightly over two hours with a 15-minute intermission. While the theater is dark for most of the play and Captain Hook fires his gun twice throughout the show, it isn't a scary play and children should be fine seeing it. Last night, the theater was pretty crowded, mostly families and Grandparents with children. It was a lot of fun hearing the kids out loud at Captain Hook's antics or gasp when Peter Pan first appeared on stage flying through the Darling family's nursery windows by surprise.
One thing you should definitely pay close attention to in this play is the theatrics. Cathy Rigby, at 59, is stunning. I can only hope that when I am almost 60 I am as agile and healthy as she is now. To see her flying through the air doing front- and back-flips is amazing. I won't give it away, but make sure you stay until the very end, after the final curtain call. There is a one "little" surprise left....
