ALL-NEW SHREK THE MUSICAL COMING TO ATLANTA!

Fifth Estate Entertainment and Round Room Live are thrilled to announce that an all-new version of SHREK THE MUSICAL will stop in Atlanta for three performances only April 6 – 7 as part of the Regions Bank Broadway in Atlanta 2023/2024 Season.

Audiences can expect a SHREK that feels both familiar and refreshingly new, inviting everyone to “fall in love all ogre again.” Tickets will go on sale on Friday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m. with prices starting at $30.

Tickets will be available at the Fox Theatre box office at 660 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30308, by visiting foxtheatre.org/shrek, or by calling (855)-285-8499. Group orders of 10 or more may be placed by calling the Fox Theatre at (855)-285-8499.

SHREK THE MUSICAL will play for a limited engagement in Atlanta April 6 -7. The performance schedule is as follows:

  • Saturday 7 p.m.
  • Sunday 1 p.m., 5:30 p.m.

Kimberly Akimbo Tony Award-winning duo Jeanine Tesori (music) and David Lindsay-Abaire (book) have re-visited their first collaboration to deliver a more intimate and engaging experience. With all-new original direction and choreography by Danny Mefford (Choreographer, Dear Evan Hansen), this reimagined production of SHREK THE MUSICAL brings the show back to its roots - giving it a new kind of love emphasizing the importance of loving ourselves and one another.

David Lindsay-Abaire says “It’s been such a gift to get to revisit the show after all these years and rethink some of the choices and reimagine the piece as a whole. This all-new production is leaner and more focused. It’s joyful and funny and feels beautifully hand-crafted in a way that really brings out the things we first fell in love with – the heart and wonder and humor of the story.”

Jeanine Tesori adds, “We wanted to make a show that families could come to, to laugh, and be moved. Something that would create a memory, because everybody has felt like an ogre now and then.”

Based on the hit DreamWorks animated film, SHREK THE MUSICAL is a hilarious fairy tale adventure with a cast of vibrant characters and a ‘shrek-tacular’ score that’s perfect for the young and the young-at-heart! Our unlikely hero finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and the feisty Princess Fiona who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand...and his name is Shrek. It’s not easy being green, but this irreverently fun musical proves that beauty is truly in the eye of the ogre!

The tour cast features Nicholas Hambruch (Shrek), Cecily Dionne Davis (Fiona), Naphtali Yaakov Curry (Donkey), Timmy Lewis (Lord Farquaad), Jamir Brown (Pinocchio), Tori Kocher (Dragon), Kelly Prendergast (Gingy/US Fiona), Hope Schafer (Mama Ogre/Wicked Witch/Blue Bird), Riley Johnston (Pig/Knight/2nd Shrek US), Katherine Paladichuk (Teen Fiona/Peter Pan), Sage Jepson (Wolf/Shrek US), Cynthia Ana Rivera (Mama Bear/ Dragon US), Carson Zoch (Pig/Pinocchio Cover), Demetrio Alomar (Papa Ogre/Papa Bear), Ally Choe (Young Fiona/Ugly Duckling/Gingy US), Leon Ray (Pig), Casey Lamont (Female Swing), and John Cardenas (Male Swing). Harrison Roth is music director.

SHREK THE MUSICAL features scenic design by Steven Kemp, costume design by Linda Cho, lighting design by Herrick Goldman, sound design by Ben Selke, Puppet Design by Camille LaBarre, and Props by Cam Upton, orchestrations by John Clancy, tour music supervision by Chris Fenwick, and casting by Wojcik Casting Team. The executive producer for the tour is Dani Davis.

The original SHREK THE MUSICAL opened on Broadway on December 14, 2008, running for 441 performances and 37 previews. The musical received eight Tony Award nominations, winning one.

Holding onto hope when times are tough can take an awful lot of determination, and sometimes, an awful lot of determination comes in a surprisingly small package. Little Orphan Annie has reminded generations of theatergoers that sunshine is always right around the corner, and now the best-loved musical of all time is set to return in this new production – just as you remember it and just when we need it most. This celebration of family, optimism, and the American spirit remains the ultimate cure for all the hard knocks life throws your way.

Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as, “one of the best family musicals ever penned!”, ANNIE features a book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, and lyrics by Martin Charnin. All three authors received 1977 Tony Awards® for their work.

By permission of Tribune Content Agency, LLC, ANNIE is based on Harold Gray's popular comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” which premiered in the 1920s in the New York Daily News and became one of the most widely read strips in the 30s and 40s. Lyricist Martin Charnin bought a coffee table book called “The Life and Hard Times of Little Orphan Annie” as a Christmas gift for a friend in 1970. The clerk at the bookstore was too busy to wrap the book, so Charnin took the book home to wrap it. Instead, he read it and fell in love with the strip and set out to secure the rights. The friend never got the book.

The original production of ANNIE had its world premiere on August 10, 1976 at the Goodspeed Opera House (Michael J. Price, Executive Director) and opened on Broadway on April 21, 1977 at the Alvin Theatre (Neil Simon theatre). It went on to win the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, seven Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, the Grammy for Best Cast Show Album, and seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book (Thomas Meehan), and Best Score (Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin). It closed on Broadway after playing 2,377 performances. ANNIE was revived on Broadway in 1997 and again in 2014. It has been made into a film three times (1982, 1999, 2014) and was most recently featured as a live television production on NBC. The show remains one of the biggest Broadway musical hits ever; it has been performed in 28 languages and has been running somewhere around the world for 45 years.

The beloved score for ANNIE includes “Maybe,” “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” “Easy Street,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You” and the eternal anthem of optimism, “Tomorrow.”

This production of ANNIE was licensed by Music Theatre International.

Having played over 3,000 performances, the New York production is among the Top 20 longest runs in Broadway history.

Hailed by The New York Times as “fabulous and extravagant,” the Broadway production has broken 16 New Amsterdam Theatre house records and spawned nine additional productions on four continents. Worldwide it has welcomed more than 16 million people and can be seen currently on Broadway and on tour across North America, as well as in Japan and Spain, with a UK tour opening shortly.

The animated film Aladdin was released by Disney in 1992 and was a critical and box office smash, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year. The film won the Oscar for Best Original Score and introduced the hit song “A Whole New World,” which won the second of the film’s two Academy Awards as Best Original Song. The Peabo Bryson/Regina Belle recording of the tune soared to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Fiddler on the Roof Opens at Atlanta's Fox Theatre

Yikes!

The image above is from a dream sequence inside NETworks Presentations' Fidder on the Roof ("Fiddler") production, playing this week at Atlanta's The Fox Theatre.

This one still picture represents all the goodness, talent, and wonderfulness of this musical.  It also represents all the oddities and craziness of this story and production.

I'll be honest here.

I knew the music (well, some of it) from Fiddler, but I didn't know the story.  I had never seen the movie. Both my Grandmother and my Parents had the music around.  Record albums, TV, organ sheet music.  But - still.  I never sat down and actually watched the movie.

The first half of this musical is phenomenal.  Be prepared, though.  The first act is two hours long, so make sure you are well settled, have taken your potty break, and are equipped with your snacks and beverages of choice.

The first half develops the story.  Gives us the background on the characters, their environment, the time they live in, and their relationship with each other and community.  Community.  It is a huge part of Fiddler, and without it, the play would have no knitting together.

The choreography is spectacular.  The group dance scenes by the male dancers is on spot and fabulous.  So many times, they had the audience clapping in time with them on stage.  Many times, audience members shouted out at the scenes and characters in front of them.  Many times, whoops and hollers where given to the musical numbers.

The songs are familiar and well-loved, as this story has now been told for decades.

The actors are amazing.  Super talented, funny, and true to the characters they portray.  You can't go wrong heading back to the theatre to see Fiddler.  Even children would be welcome at this show, as there is no nudity and no profanity.

Keep in mind, though, that if you take your children, you will probably have to explain this time in history and what is happening.  Many older children will be able to understand and open doors for discussion, but it may be a little disturbing for younger children.

The second half of the play, about an hour in length, is not as powerful as the first half (or so that is my humble opinion).  While the actors and music are still on spot, the story moves into a more meatier story line reflecting the time period it is set in and thus, turns dark and gloomy.

We see our characters' wedding destroy, their homes ripped out from under them, and the community dissolving as each family heads to different parts of the new world that is developing around them.

Since I have never seen the movie, the musical encourages me to dig deeper and find out more about the story line, the background on each family, and to help me understand the ending a little better.

I would say that if you are planning on attending this show, watch the movie first.  Gain a little bit of foundation and understanding of the story line, the time period it is set in, and getting to know the characters and their families.  Then, sit back - singalong - clap in time - and enjoy the story America and the world have loved since 1964.

Fidder on the Roof plays The Fox Theatre through November 14th.  There are a select number of $40 tickets for each performance.  You may purchase tickets via the Fox Theatre website at foxtheatre.org.
