Discover Mills is going to be hosting several fabulous events over the next few weeks. Here are they are and a few details about each event:
- Discover Mills Welcomes Gifted Artists of America Center on November 4th
"Discover Mills, Atlanta’s largest outlet, value retail and entertainment destination, will welcome the debut location of the Gifted Artists of America Center, an art gallery and school for budding young artists created by John Daso, a nationally recognized painter. The premier art center, which will be located in Neighborhood 3 near Books-A-Million, will be funded by the proceeds from Daso’s own fine work.
Students at the Gifted – an acronym for Giving Individuals Freedom to Express Dreams – Artists of America Center will learn more than just painting and drawing. Daso will also strive to impart wisdom from his own experiences, providing students of all ages with an education on how to believe in their gifts, fine tune their talents and promote and sell their work to potential clients. The goal is to give young artists the tools necessary to prepare for the challenges of working as a professional artist.
“Discover Mills is proud to provide a unique variety of experiences to our loyal shoppers, making this an ideal location for John Daso’s new art school concept” said Karl Woodard, general manager of Discover Mills. “The addition of the Gifted Artists of America Center continues to show how Discover Mills offers more to our local community.”
Discover Mills shoppers will be encouraged to stop by the center and browse through some of John Daso’s work, which will be available for sale to raise funds for the arts program. Students of the Gifted Artists of America Center will cover the cost for this incredible learning opportunity based on their ability to pay, with the majority of expenses to be funded from art gallery proceeds.
The Grand Opening Event, on Thursday, November 4, will provide a sneak peak at John Daso’s most recent creations. Shoppers will also enjoy the opportunity to take home a variety of giveaways and door prizes, as well as valuable information about the center how to become involved. - Grammy-Award Winning Artist, Patty Loveless, Gives **FREE** Concert in ATL for DRIVE4COPD's "Great American Screen Off"
Atlanta’s own DRIVE4COPD Race Team Member Patty Loveless will be making an appearance – including a free concert – in support of the Great American Screen Off, a nationwide push to screen Americans for their risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Loveless will be competing against fellow DRIVE4COPD Celebrity Race Team Members* – Go Daddy and NASCAR Nationwide Series™ Driver Danica Patrick, Olympic Gold Medalist Bruce Jenner, and Pro Football Great Michael Strahan – to see who can screen the most people on November 4. She hopes Atlanta will beat out Dallas, LA and NYC, where her fellow celebrities will also be hosting events in honor of COPD Awareness Month.
Since launching in February 2010, the national DRIVE4COPD campaign has screened more than 375,000 people using a brief, five-question screener and encouraged people to talk to their doctor about the results. The screener is available online at DRIVE4COPD.COM.
DRIVE4COPD is a multi-year public health initiative that aims to help people identify if they are at risk for COPD and take action. Founding sponsor Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. has joined forces with a cross-section of organizations, including the American Association for Respiratory Care, the American Lung Association, the COPD Foundation, and NASCAR® on this large-scale education and awareness campaign.
Loveless, whose sister had COPD, has seen first-hand the impact of this disease. And she’snot alone:
· More than 336,000 people may have some form of COPD in Atlanta alone.
· About 24 million Americans may have COPD – also known as chronic bronchitis and emphysema – but half don’t know they have it and remain undiagnosed.
· Those at risk include people 35 years of age or older or those who have smoked more than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime.
· Early diagnosis of COPD is critical, as lung damage is not reversible but is treatable when managed with a doctor.
