Last night, a blogger friend of mine (Kelsey from Rhymes with Delicious) and myself had the pleasure of attending opening night of Guys and Dolls at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in ATL.

If you haven't ever seen this show, I want to encourage you to try and make the run while it is still here in ATL.  The drive to the Fox is simple and easy, and parking can be found for under $10.  There are also a lot of restaurants close by.  Kelsey and I chose to eat the Quizno's right next door (you know how I love coupons)!

If you don't know the history of Guys and Dolls, here is a brief excerpt from Wikipedia:

Guys and Dolls is a musical with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. It is based on "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" and "Blood Pressure", two short stories by Damon Runyon,^[1] and also borrows characters and plot elements from other Runyon stories, most notably "Pick the Winner". Premiering on Broadway in 1950, the original production ran for 1200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical has had several Broadway revivals as well as West End productions. It is generally considered to be among, or perhaps the greatest of all Broadway musicals.

I will have to chime in here and say, "Yes!"  It is probably one of the best Broadway musicals I have ever seen!  This song, in particular, was the crowd (and my) favorite.  Lots of whooping and hollering when this little number was over.  It's called Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat:





This is the Broadway cast version, but I gotta say--I enjoyed the cast at the Fox Theatre last night MUCH better.

Again, I won't go into the whole story line of the musical (you can read it on Wikipedia), but needless to say the story is set in early 20th Century New York City, and it deals with showgirls and gamblers and a group of hope-filled Christians (portrayed much like the Salvation Army in the play) out to save the "sinners" of the Big City.  Couple all that in with two separate love stories, and you have the making of a great Broadway musical.  There is a reason this play has lasted this long.  The storyline is gripping, humorous, and classic!  Guys and Dolls ties you in from the moment it starts.

I will say, however, that due to the fact that there are show girls in this play, there are some "racy" parts (although no nudity).  I did see some children in the audience, so use your best judgement in deciding whether or not to take yours along with you.  (Basically, the show girls are shown in sequenced and sparkly bras and panties during their show numbers [which aren't very long], and in today's times, those outfits merely equate to a bathing suit!)
