One of my favorite worship songs in the last few years is The Blessing by Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes.
It's one of those songs that I try to imagine how the songwriters must have felt when God was delivering it to them. Did the words and melodies just flow or did they look at each other midway through and say, "What is happening?"
I can remember serving at the Passion Conference in my hometown of Atlanta. The Conference was being held in the brand new Mercedes Benz stadium. A new stadium to our city that has a roof that retracts. Everyone in the City and Country was enthralled by it.
Passion Conferences had set a very specific time to open the roof, but at the moment it was supposed to open, it malfunctioned and wouldn't open. Of course, no one knew this except the staff working the event and who were in charge of the spectacular roof opening.
Later during the conference, Kari and Cody entered the arena to sing The Blessing. At one of the most prolific moments of the song, the roof miraculously opened up! Of course and once again, no one knew this except for the staff operating and orchestrating the opening. But to the rest of us, it was God's timing and happened at a moment that could not have been timed more perfectly.
That is the kind of experience this song brings. Miracles, blessings, and God moments in time. That's why I love it so. It brings people together to worship through music. It is a genius for our time and a worship song that will go down to rival some of Bill Gaither's finest.
